Looks a batsman light to me, but a lot of all rounders to cover the shortfall is the theory. Pleased to see Liam DAWSON get another go after ESSEX single handedly saved his career

How are we pronouncing their number 2?

What a fucking boring, dull team. How the fuck has Ballance got a reprieve? I don't care how good he has been for YORKSHIRE, you cunt. So we've got 2 African born players in the line up, 1 who is appalling, and one we don't know about really, batting at 2 and 3. Great.

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Hameed will be in at some point but has been in dreadful form so think they are protecting him a bit.
Don't quite understand Ali AND Dawson.
Agree with stewie that another specialist batsman would make them stronger but they are obviously worried about Stokes, Broad, Wood and Anderson all having had injuries.

Plenty of players have gone back a step to sort themselves out and then kicked on as Test batsmen .... but I hold my opinion til I see what Ballance has done to combat his fat little legs getting stuck 6 inches from his stumps.

Fucking how many chances has Balance had?? Absolute shit technique for the top level…. apparently Root's call so I heard.... And he’s absolute awkward as you like and shit to watch at the crease… he’s no David Ivon Gower that’s for sure…. Westley should have been given his gig….

Kearley 11:13 Thu Jul 6
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Ballance has had a couple of shocking runs in Test cricket, but still averages just shy of 40 with 4 tons from 21 Tests.

Last chance saloon for him.

Give BALLANCE the whole summer.
I hope he is a roaring success.

Sort your priorities out.

BROWNE
COOK
WESTLEY
ROOT
LAWRENCE

I dread the day. Unless it's overseas.

How many times do people want to trot that out? Everyone kept saying that the last 2 times he was shoehorned in, first of all it was 'he averages 70 in test cricket', then it was 'he averages 60 in test cricket', now it's just shy of 40!

He come into the side and made 4 quick centuries, but as soon as teams worked out he has no technique whatsoever, he has been shown up for the embarrassment he is.

Cue him getting some runs, and Grumpster reposting this. Regardless, he has only got his place because Root is captain. I called it early, Root should never have got the job.

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Reckon he will get a couple of Tests to STAKE his claim.
I'd expect to see HAMEED, WOAKES & BUTTLER in before too long.
And maybe CRANE against the West Indies ahead of the Ashes.
Presuming they aren't cancelled of course.

lowermarshhammer 11:38 Thu Jul 6
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
BALLANCE is second in the averages behind SANGA.

Definitely worthy of a place based on that.

Eerie Descent 11:42 Thu Jul 6
Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Why not give some exposure to an English batsmen who has been playing well? Why give a THIRD chance to a player who has looked like a number 11 in his last 10 tests?

It's disgraceful, and he's only in their because he is everyone's MATE behind the scenes, especially the new captain.

Can't see the ASHES being cancelled.

Whoever paid for the TV rights will apply some pressure and someone will cave in.

MATES ALL OUT

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Remember Michael Vaughan when he started having an average that was nothing to spectacular when he started but everyone that saw him play knew he was absolutely suited to Test Cricket…. The same with Westley…. He looks a test cricketer… got all the tools… I don’t care that 25 chance Gary Balance averages more than him he is no more a test standard batsman than Roland Bucher was… and lets be honest would you pay top dollar to watch mr Static legs Balance bat all day?? I’d prefer to shove a knitting needle in my eyeball….

Root wins the toss, England BAT

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
As others have said, Ballance is a waste of space. Batting looks vulnerable to collapse to me.

As for two "spinners", why play them for the sake of it? Pick your 4/5 best bowlers, regardless of their type.

Can see the bowling struggling,as Anderson and Broad sometimes do on good batting wickets.

Sven Roeder 12:12 Thu Jul 6

Root saying the pitch looks dry and thinks it will break up for the spinners.

20/2

Cook and Jennings gone to 2 crap decisions (Cook with the shot selection, and Jennings not to review).

England down to their last 2 specialist batsmen.

England down to their last 2 specialist batsmen.

Very kind on Ballance, that.

Re: 1st Test England v South Africa at Lords
Really odd by Jennings
It ended up being pitched closer to leg than it looked on first view but was missing anyway.
Seemed a bit non-plussed playing against S Africa.
At least he didn't join in the appeal.

Ballance doesn't appear to have changed his technique at all. Has an even more pronounced step back towards his stumps after he sets up.
